Public bug reported:

I launched gnome-photos for the first time (ever) after installing
3.28.0-1 on Xubuntu 18.04.1.  Although the application indicates that
pictures from my Pictures folder will appear, none actually appear.
Clicking on the "Pictures folder" link opens up a file manager window to
~/Pictures in which I have several assorted images (mainly JPG format).
I couldn't find a settings or preferences dialog.  The application
doesn't appear to provide the capability to do much of anything,
actually.

I couldn't figure out how to run the application in debug/verbose mode.
The only hints I have are these messages in syslog when I launch the
application:
