I haven't seen this problem in a while. It may have been resolved when I installed ncsd https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nis/+bug/1745664. Or when I disabled Turbo on my i7-7820x. Turbo definitely leads to occasional gnome crashes sadly.
