I had this same problem when upgrading from feisty. After reading through numerous forums and trying "fixes" that made matters worse I got a little frustrated. I downloaded the latest iso and reinstalled ubuntu 7.10 gutsy. This corrected all of my problems and gutsy gibbon is running smoothly and looks quite nice now. I am assuming there were some conflicting configurations from previous installations of compiz that did not get along with fusion. Hope this helps.
