It's been quite some time since this happened, and I've since reinstalled and got things working quite well. IIRC, the problem was that the wm* commands simply were not working at all.
I do not remember the solution, but I do remember that it involved deleting the GNUStep directory and possibly reinstalling the package. Feel free to close the bug if it suits you, I am not having any issues with the application.
