This worked for me:
sudo apt install slick-greeter
printf '[Seat:*]\ngreeter-session=slick-greeter\n' | sudo tee -a
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
(maybe that means this bug is actually in lightdm-gtk-greeter?)
