This bug still presents in latest Ubuntu release (7.10 "Gutsy) - swap partition
with hibernation data still isn't detected automatically in initrd :(
If there are a problem with restoring from hibernate Windows operating system
displays a menu:
1. "Try to restore from hibernation"
2. "Erase hibernation data and do clean boot"
I think Ubuntu should behave similar.
