it seems likely there may be packaging or integration problems here, tho
this bug emerges on multiple highly popular distributions.

how should things get arranged so that installing gnucash with apt-get
(or yum) would pull in the libraries it needs?

and meanwhile as a workaround i would be grateful for hints as to what
packages to install to get gnucash settings functional.

i am installing gnucash, twm, xterm, and either vnc server or X or both.

i have installed these on centos6 (gnucash-2.4.15-4.el6.x86_64), xenial
(gnucash 1:2.6.12-1), and bionic (gnucash 1:2.6.19-1).  in all 3,
gnucash does not crash, and is minimally usable, but lacks the ability
to adjust any settings.
