could you please post the output when you run "freeplane" from a
terminal window?

If you use freemind, you will most probably lose data, as the two are not 
compatible.
There is a better workaround: Use the upstream provided freeplane debian 
package:

1. download
https://sourceforge.net/projects/freeplane/files/freeplane%20stable/freeplane_1.7.7
%7Eupstream-1_all.deb/download

2. sudo dpkg -i freeplane_1.7.7~upstream-1_all.deb

(if you do this, please post the output of Ubuntu's freeplane first,
so that I can analyze/fix this)
