if I purge jde, then emacs updates itself correctly. and then i can aptitude install jde. however, i need to swap the first two lines in /usr/share/doc-base/jde so that "Document:" is first. but i had already corrected this problem, and this is not the cause of my report below. i'm a little confused as i've seen this happen a couple of times in the past. i think i even had a problem with "aptitude install emacs21 gnus" once. where this had to be done in two separate calls to aptitude, first to install emacs21, and then gnus.
