Same thing happened to me on my Dell Optiplex GX110 running Ubuntu 7.1. Showed an item count but Inbox was emtpy. No filters were in use. Still empty after deleting all search folders except Unmatched. I noticed however that the search folders had the emails that should have been in the Inbox. So I created a new Search Folder that was set to match everything and all my emails appeared in it, with the unmatched becoming empty. I then copied the emails back into my inbox.
Hopefully this work around may help someone troubleshoot.
