It did the same to me, and I figured out what's happening.

It happens when you check the box in Preferences/File Editing/Filetype
associations, and there is no association to the type of file you're
trying to open.

For example, in the text box in Preferences/File Editing/Filetype
associations, I only had :

txt /usr/bin/gedit


And when I tried to open a .sh file, nothing happened.

So this could be the cause of your problem.
Maybe Filezilla could display a message saying "No program is associated to 
that filetype", or something like that.
