This sounds like it might be bug 1798790. Please try this workaround:
1. Edit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and uncomment the line:
#WaylandEnable=false
2. Reboot
** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => gdm3 (Ubuntu)
** Changed in: gdm3 (Ubuntu)
