OK, in the interest of full disclosure, here is a bit more about the root of my problems. I was trying to use this in a virtualized environment. It turns out that the kernel compiled didn't include the nfsd module which led to the above error of "unknown filesystem type 'nfsd'". A crafty colleague of mine was able to compile said module out of tree and I can now start the nfs kernel server. Thanks all for your help.
