I've just installed boinc myself, and when starting boincmgr, I get the same
error dialog:
"""
Authorization failed connecting to running client.
Make sure you start this program in the same directory as the client.
"""
It appears you have to go to "Advanced => Select computer..." and chose
"localhost" with an empty password there.
Please note that the crash itself is something different and looks like
bug 150318.
