Thnx for the email I was trying to re install Ubuntu Linux 6.06 on the same existing OS as GRUB would not work on dual boot of Windows Xp & ULinux DDrake
I had accidentaslly erased my partitions. Recovered them with Test disk utility. The partitions would work if Windows installation CD was in the drive. When I tried to fix this with "fixmbr", GRUB was gone , not working even after a lot of editing. I recovered my data files in Ubuntu with PCLinuxOS. Tried to re install the ULinux on same old "/" & "swap partition" (without formatting; in an attemp to keep the old installation), but the installation would crash (three times). So I reinstalled ULinux on same partitions by keeping the FORMATTING options on the two.
