I have the same problem - Had VPN working great under 6.10, then fine under 7.04, then decided to accept upgrade to 7.10 and the VPN stopped working. Decided to rebiuld to 7.04 still wouldn't work and have finally built new 7.10.
On 7.10 I have installed network-manager-pptp (this is the only thing different from a straight install) and according to synaptic it's 0.6.5+svnhead2574-0ubuntu1_i386 so from another post this looks right. Just one thing to point out it's a guest on VMWare Workstation 6 with an XP host. I can create a vpn connection definition, but then have no way of starting it. There does seem to be a general problem with recent packages (if only I knew which ones!) even going to manual configuration I get the following errors in syslog (I've seen this on other bug threads I've found as well - just added here for weight) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: pppd options in effect: Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: debug^I^I# (from command line) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: nodetach^I^I# (from command line) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: logfd 2^I^I# (from command line) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: dump^I^I# (from command line) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: noauth^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options.pptp) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: refuse-eap^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options.pptp) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: name johnh2^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/peers/trust3) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: remotename PPTP^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/peers/trust3) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: ^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options.pptp) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: pty pptp nw1.trust-iv.co.uk --nolaunchpppd^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/peers/trust3) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: crtscts^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: ^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: asyncmap 0^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: lcp-echo-failure 4^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: lcp-echo-interval 30^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: hide-password^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: ipparam trust^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/peers/trust3) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: proxyarp^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: nobsdcomp^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options.pptp) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: nodeflate^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options.pptp) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: require-mppe^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/peers/trust3) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: require-mppe-128^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options.pptp) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: noipx^I^I# (from /etc/ppp/options) Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: pppd 2.4.4 started by johnh, uid 0 Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: using channel 3 Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: Using interface ppp0 Nov 20 12:00:54 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/4 Nov 20 12:00:55 johnh-710Fresh pppd[14695]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xba785e28> <pcomp> <accomp>] Nov 20 12:00:57 johnh-710Fresh pptp[14698]: anon log[main:pptp.c:267]: The synchronous pptp option is NOT activated Nov 20 12:00:57 johnh-710Fresh pptp[14701]: anon log[ctrlp_rep:pptp_ctrl.c:251]: Sent control packet type is 1 'Start-Control-Connection-Request' Nov 20 12:00:57 johnh-710Fresh pptp[14701]: anon log[ctrlp_disp:pptp_ctrl.c:738]: Received Start Control Connection Reply Nov 20 12:00:57 johnh-710Fresh pptp[14701]: anon log[ctrlp_disp:pptp_ctrl.c:772]: Client connection established.
