Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

When setting the virtual desktop size to greater than 2048 in either direction
(necessary for multi monitor support using xrandr), the intel driver disables
direct rendering, thus disabling desktop effects.
See:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installing_Ubuntu_6.06.1_on_a_ThinkPad_R60e#Intel_945GM_with_the_xorg_Intel_driver
>From the article:
It is a limitation of the Intel driver that frame buffer size cannot be changed
once X has started. Therefore in order to hotplug a variety of screens this
should be set the allow for the largest combination of display resolutions you
plan to use. For the Intel 945 chip in the R60e a virtual size larger than 2048
will disable DRI. (If you do not need 3D graphics that is not important.)

I am using Ubuntu 7.10 on a 2nd Gen MacBook.

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
