Public bug reported:
Invoking dmsetup with insufficient privileges produces a large number of
error messages, some of them somewhat disturbing:
vnix$ dmsetup ls
/dev/mapper/control: open failed: Permission denied
Failure to communicate with kernel device-mapper driver.
/dev/mapper/control: open failed: Permission denied
Failure to communicate with kernel device-mapper driver.
Incompatible libdevmapper 1.02.20 (2007-06-15)(compat) and kernel driver
Command failed
vnix$ sudo dmsetup ls
temporary-cryptsetup-12476 (254, 0)
alt (254, 1)
usb (254, 2)
It would seem trivial to handle the first "permission denied" with a
help message and aborting with an error, rather than falling through to
produce all kinds of stray error messages. It's not improbable that
some people would even feel the urge to reboot when they see
"Incompatible libdevmapper" rather than stop and think.
