I have pulseaudio-esound-compat installed. I went through all of the tabs in Sound Preferences and there isn't a choice for "use sound server". There is a choice for 'Enable software sound mixing (ESD)' which I have selected. I had this selected before and pulse wasn't loading.
I installed asoundconf-gtk and it gave me a pulseaudio choice. I selected it.
