Public bug reported: Since Ubuntu 16.04, it is impossible to use the microphone of headsets (those which come with 4 ring jack connector). The main microphone is sometimes usable (I think it's okay with Ubuntu 18.04). With Ubuntu 19.04, neither the embedded (main) microphone nor those on headsets are functional, I thus cannot record any sound.
I've read many things, tried many modifications of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa- base.conf in order to let the Internal Broadwell audio card be seen before HDMI audio, for example. Here is the Alsa diagnostic I ran : http://alsa- project.org/db/?f=06e98f49dcfaf88991b4a992e66409b71976f038 I also verified everything was fine with alsamixer -c1 (broadwaell-rt286 is second by default). I also tried to use pavucontral, as under Ubuntu 18.04 it helped me to "start" the embedded microphone. With this tool, under Ubuntu 19.04, I see strange settings : there is an "internal audio main microphone + handset microphone" entry, there once were 2 entries. And the handset microphone is always "plugged in" and the "main microphone" is always unplugged.
