P.S. I THINK that update-motd is meant to run the updates only occasionally, and just cache the results somewhere. I'd find a reasonable strategy that if the cache is older than an hour, but less than 24h, you'd get the cached version, but a refresh is run in the background. If the cache is older than 24h, you'll have to wait for the cache to be refreshed. If the cache is less than an hour old, show the cache.
