I have the same problem with an Asus A6U series (Mashita again): I cannot burn DVD+R, if I write any CD at any speed more than 8x the process ends when the first speed increment happens (8x works because the speed is constant from the beginning until the end); if I write CD- RW sometimes I receive an error during calibration... Unfortunately I don't have the precise output of cdrkit here now. This problem is present at least in the last 2 releases of Ubuntu, I think since when we switched from cdrecord.
