The problem which I reported seems to have been resolved, probably due to
updates. I checked just now and everything seems to be just as it should be.
By the way, the visual effects were set to normal ever since I upgraded
the system to Ubuntu 7.10.
Anyway, thanks a lot for taking interest in my problem and offering
help. I now realise how strong the Ubuntu community is!
