Ah, i killed compiz, and discovered that without compiz, the video runs. I am using X11 video output. Perhaps it requests a drawing area of odd size which returns an error and kills vlc. Perhaps local to my computer, and now that I restart compiz, the error does not occur constantly, but randomly. It says a segmentation fault. I guess a library is causing the error, because VLC does not give a crash dump.
