I'm afraid the problem seemed to be related to a bad processor.  I noticed
several different problems, apart from the reported firefox problem, over
the course of a couple months.  Finally, the machine just crashed.  I put
the same hard drive with the same Ubuntu installation into a machine with a
different processor and haven't had any problems since.  Given the
circumstances, I would say this is a non-issue.
