I'm afraid the problem seemed to be related to a bad processor. I noticed several different problems, apart from the reported firefox problem, over the course of a couple months. Finally, the machine just crashed. I put the same hard drive with the same Ubuntu installation into a machine with a different processor and haven't had any problems since. Given the circumstances, I would say this is a non-issue.
