gdm would normally use :0 so this is interesting. Do you end up with both an Xorg.0.log and an Xorg.1.log ? Do you have /var/log/gdm/:0.log as well as :1.log? These log files might give a clue.
I suspect the problem is compiz crashing at login and blocking both DRI and :0.
