suspended system, waited, it resumed (image was visible briefly before xscreensaver covered screens; screensaver woke on touch of key - i'll record as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome- screensaver/+bug/1280300 Issue is exactly as described, except the xscreensaver image appeared in well under a second after laptop awoke.
