Problem has been solved. The install/upgrade of mysql-common package failed because the file: /var/lib/dpkg/info/mysql-common.preinst had been corrupted (non-accessable even for root) due to a disk-controller problem and apt-get obviously tried to overwrite it while unpacking the .deb file. running fsck -f /dev/sdbX in recovery mode fixed the corrupt file.
