Sorry for the delay. Forest is right. I am clicking "switch page direction". The problem is that I'm not *trying* to click it, it sort of clicks on itself. i.e. if I just right-click, I click "switch page direction". To work around this, I should right-click-and-not-release.
This is a laptop touchpad, so I can click without moving the cursor. In the wikipedia link above, sometimes the right-click menu opens, other times it doesn't (this is of course only when the page is suitably positioned so that the right click menu appears above the cursor and not below it). So probably this is a synaptics issue.
