seems v similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/checkinstall/+bug/165074 but
10 years on.
- closed laptop lid during checkinstall
- saw error message when reopened, "installation failed, creating backup"
- it ctrl+c
- all terminals start reporting errors eg /bin/sh no such file
- reboot, fails, attempt recovery mode boot, hd decrypt works, but subsequent
attempt to boot os kernel panics
