I'm using Gutsy and experience the exact same symptoms. Although sometimes I get the black screen described above, other times I'll get a plain orange background but the symptoms are identical which ever color comes up. Keyboard input is not recognized and I have to use a hard reset to get my desktop back. For me this behavior can be duplicated reliably.
- Use "Logout" to end user session. - Have one of the other users login...works fine for them. - Have user select "logout" to end session. - Log back in on my account. The login commands are accepted and the greeting sound plays but the desktop will not appear. Mouse cursor is visible but no mouse clicks or keyboard commands are recognized. As a work around we've started using Switch User instead of Logout but it's a shame to need to do that. I'm not running the proprietary drivers on this machine. I am on another box but haven't tried to duplicate the problem.
