Hi! I had this bug with my brand new computer w/ ubuntu 7.04. It was a bug of the kernel (with asus m2v) now with the 2.6.23 it's working perfectly. However you can try to add the options noacpi & noapic to your kernel boot line, in grub.conf or for the first run in grub. By the way, did-you tried a memtest?
