For what it is worth... There was a message when I did an apt-get update/upgrade and what not telling me there was a ton of packages that I didn't need anymore, and to clear them out do 'apt-get autoremove'. I did this, and it removed pretty much the entire kubuntu-desktop package. Once it was complete I did, apt-get install kubuntu-desktop, and rebooted w/o any problems.
So now, I had 2 issues fixed with the kubuntu-desktop 'reinstall'.
