Last week we had some IRC talk about the space on the CDs and concluded
that all the PostScript PPDs (13 MB) take too much space on the CDs. We
concluded to split linuxprinting.org-ppds into two packages named
linuxprinting.org-ppds and linuxprinting.org-ppds-extra, with
linuxprinting.org-ppds going into mail and containing the most important
PPDs for end users and linuxprinting.org-ppds-extra goes into universe
and contains the rest of the PPDs. linuxprinting.org-ppds should suggest
linuxprinting.org-ppds-extra.
As most common PPDs I would consider PPDs for low-end and mid-range
printers which can be bought cash-&-carry and where the manufacturer
does not necessarily provide service and support for Linux users
everywhere.
As Ricoh and partners offers a very good service for Linux users and
also offers only high-end devices which are sold with service, I think
it is not so important to ship the Ricoh brand PPDs (Gestetner, Infotec,
Lanier, NRG, Ricoh, Savin) on the distro CD. If someone has a Ricoh
printer he gets the PPD easily from Ricoh, or there is a sysadmin who
picks the file from universe or linuxprinting.org. In addition, there is
ongoing upstream work so that distros can get PPDs and drivers from
linuxprinting.org automatically (to be added in Ubuntu 7.04 or 7.10).
