Ran into the same scanner issue today with a Brother MFC-6490CW under Ubuntu 18.04 (factory installed by Dell and fully updated before attempting printer/scanner install). Found pdc's post on askubuntu.com ( https://askubuntu.com/a/1054065/314730 ) first, which linked to staedtler-przyborski's symlink answer ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane- backends/+bug/1728012/comments/25 ).
