snort is a must-have tool on routers and the like and the only way
debian/ubuntu users have to use snort is to install from source. As John
Moser said I see no point in shipping outdated rules so the "new" (it
isn't really that new indeed :-)) vrt rules license should be not a
problem, shipping an up to date version of snort without any rules is
the way to go imho.
