It sounds like you or something accidentally changed VT. Next time it
happens please try Ctrl+Alt+F2

When I ran "update-grub" after editing the grub.conf file to have
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset" written in it, the screen turned to
black and displayed the running taks with the green "OK" letters next
to them
