It definitely is the initramfs. After successfully mounting the root
filesystem (sda10) the following messages are displayed:
-- /scripts/init-bottom/udev: line 25: nuke: not found
-- done.
-- init: line 303: run-init: not found
-- Target filesystem does not have requested /sbin/init.
-- init: line 303: run-init: not found (5*)
-- No init found. Try passing init= bootarg.
Yesterday's ext?fs updates triggered an initramfs rebuild. After restoring my
backup I reran those updates and had a good look at the initramfs rebuild
messages. I saw a complaint about a missing /lib/klibc-*.so file. And indeed
that file is missing.
I copied the /lib/klibc-wBFLvVtxy4xJqEadIBJMa78iJz8.so from an other Xubuntu
installation and reran things: *problem resolved*.
