OK, adding networkstatus (http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/kde/networkstatus) worked, but as soon as I rebooted I had the same problem again. I had to reinstall networkstatus to get my internet back. Now, when I try to do an update it gives me a list of about 16 files to update, networkstatus is one of them. It actually only updates network status. When I try to update again it lists all of those files, but it does not upgrade them although it tells me the upgrade is complete and the notification is still there in the system tray. When I reboot I lose my internet connection again and when I reinstall networkstatus the same vicious cycle begins again.
