It works, and I'm now one very happy man :)

Word of warning to anyone doing this, however...  I had my laptop setup
as dual boot, with Vista on the first partition.  When grub re-writes
menu.lst, it does not write it properly, and you cannot reload anything.
Make sure you backup this file and have an alternate install cd handy to
restore the bootup if you are using dual boot.  It took me forever to
figure out how to get everything running since you can't edit the
menu.lst file from the grub command line.
