On my system www-browser, from a terminal, launches w3m, a text mode
browser. Not good anyway, and doesn't even start from gmail-notify.

I don't think we should hard-code firefox. There are (several :-()
standard ways to call a browser, so the user can change the settings
once for all apps. Either call x-www-browser (which gives priority to
mozilla over firefox, bug already reported), or rather gnome-www-browser
(probably the best choice at this point).
