Public bug reported:
Android studio requires qemu-kvm to emulate android images.
After installing qemu, libvirt-daemon-system, libvirt-clients and
bridge-utils, my system (host) appears to function correctly but it
consistently fails during shutdown.
I have not actually run any android/qemu images so it is certainly not a
guest issue.
After removing the qemu related packages, the system is back to shutting
down properly.
I suspect the problem has a connection with the kernel. Going over the error
messages in journalctl, I see that - only with qemu/libvirt installed - the
following will appear when booting up:
eb 29 14:02:10 Dapple kernel: ccp 0000:2a:00.1: sev command 0x4 timed out,
disabling PSP
Feb 29 14:02:10 Dapple kernel: ccp 0000:2a:00.1: SEV: failed to get status.
Error: 0x0
Feb 29 14:02:10 Dapple kernel: BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address:
0000000000000040
Feb 29 14:02:10 Dapple kernel: #PF: supervisor read access in kernel mode
Feb 29 14:02:10 Dapple kernel: #PF: error_code(0x0000) - not-present page
I have also noticed that libvirt-* caused apt to block as it was being purged.
I had to do a hard reboot to clear the lock. Here is the relevant excerpt from
/var/log/apt/history (compare the start-date and the end-date: 9 minutes and
not even finished...):
Start-Date: 2020-02-29 14:15:30
Commandline: apt purge libvirt-daemon-system libvirt-clients
Requested-By: jurgen (1000)
Purge: libvirt-clients:amd64 (5.4.0-0ubuntu5), libvirt-daemon-system:amd64
(5.4.0-0ubuntu5)
End-Date: 2020-02-29 14:24:35
