Public bug reported:
This bug is 100% reproducible and 100% annoying. In Kubuntu Gutsy, if
you "Safely Remove" a USB pendisk, the device does get indeed unmounted.
HOWEVER, the icon also disappears from the Desktop, making it impossible
to mount it again without having to physically unplug and replug the
device (or to use the console, which I do).
