Ah finally figure out the source of this brokenness ....

I'm also suffering from this - for 15+ years now my home directory has
largely consisted of symbolic links to directories in other mounted file
systems (not mounted under /mnt)

I can't upload PCB gerber files to get PCBs made, I can't upload .csv
files to the fulfillment service that ships my products to customers -
chromium is largely broken, I can't download files into /tmp so I don't
have delete them later

I think the problem  is at Canonical has decided how home directories
should be rather than going out and find out how they actually are - it
may be "working as intended" but it's still broken

How do we turn this stuff completely off? or at least be able to
whitelist paths rather than this nanny-state crap
