I had exactly the same issue as nshire (above). Was running 19.10 without problems, went to do a routine update, completed successfully - reboot - freeze at loading initial Ramdisk. I downloaded the 19.10 iso tried to boot using that, but no joy. Tried all the suggestions here about nosmp, nomodeset etc - same problems.
