Thanks Miguel for bug report.
Could you please run simple-scan with debuging, by opening terminal and
running:
simple-scan -d
and reproduce issue by scanning one page with changed brighness and contrast.
Next write terminal output to file and attach to this bug report.
It will help to verify if it is the issue with Simple-scan or with Sane
backend.
