Sorry for the imprecise language.
"Access" should have read "push modifications back to repo".
The cause was in my $HOME/.config. I had:
[credential "github.com"]
useHttpPath = true
which I honestly don't know where it comes from because I'm not aware of
having included it (should be in my log book if I had)
After changing to
[credential "https://github.com";]
useHttpPath = true
pushing started to work again
