If the gnome desktop is running, power management puts the laptop to
sleep when the battery is low (although not always, most of the times
only).

Without the gnome desktop running (using dwm, wm, etc), then when the
battery gets depleted the system dies without warning. I would expect
the operating system, not the desktop, to manage power and ALWAYS put
the computer to sleep when battery is depleted. How come this is not?
