Yes, it's a constant irritation and I'm embarrassed every time my wife
tries to import pictures from our camera via our SD-card reader.

I patched pmount locally at one point, then pmount was deprecated in
favor of what I believe to be hal/dbus, of which I can't wrap my head
around in order to fix the mount scripts.

The long and short is, create 2 users. Add them both to the "users"
group and set this as their primary group. Now log them both into an x
session on the same machine and mount some removable media. The user
that whose desktop is being displayed on your monitor is not necessarily
the user that will mount the device ... it's a race condition between
the 2 X-sessions. Look at /media/<mountedmedia>. The permissions will
show you who "won" the race condition.

The problem I run into is when my wife sticks media in the computer, she
never knows which login it'll mount under. So she copies files to the
computer and goes to edit them (redeye, orientation, etc). Except if my
account was the one that actually mounted the device the permissions are
set at rwxr--r-- (755), then the files come over to the computer that
way and she is unable to edit them due to her having read-only access.

Also, due to the race condition, the user that currently has their
desktop displayed on the monitor is not necessarily the user that can
unmount the media (if the other user is the owner of the
/media/<mountedmedia> device.

Bottom line is:

a) race condition for mounting
b) permissions are 755 instead of my umask of 775

Thanks for your followup! I hope to someday be able to not explain to
my wife about what is happening as she looks at me with "you're kidding,
right?" eyes.

Jim
