It seems to be the same problem here with ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2017 version with integrated Intel HD Graphics 620).
Booting with external monitor attached to the HDMI port systematically makes the boot hangs atfer grub boot menu. To get out of this, I have to press the power button for a long time, and then I can boot again with the external cable unplugged.
